Spotlight On: My All-Time-Favorite Lines

1. Take my hand, take my whole life too.

Elvis singing these lyrics makes me swoon just as instantaneously as you imagine he would, I cannot help it; however, Lick the Tins, (who even are these guys?), sing the same line in a cover of the song (featured in Some Kind of Wonderful) and almost have me thinking that I prefer their version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” to the slightly more popular Elvis’. Justifiably, this was, I think, the only song the band ever successfully produced.  And how! it’s great.

But oh god, I just re-listened to Elvis and I take back everything I said.

2. I will preface this by saying that it does not shame me at all to admit, That Thing You Do! may very well rank questionably high on my list on top 10 favorite movies of all time. That said, there is a moment, when Liv Tyler’s character finally sees the man she has loved for who he really is, and says..

“Shame on me for kissing you with my eyes closed so tight.”

COME ON! im on the floor again.

3. “Call me Bogie…because they belong together.”

Already a French romantic at 13, Daniel, in my all-time-favorite film, A Little Romance, requests that the young Diane Lane call him Bogie.

Thelonious Bernard, let me be the Ingrid Bergman to your Bogie.

4. I’d like to buy you everything

a wooden bird with painted wings

a window full of colored rings

In Morning Morgantown

But the only thing I have to give,

to make you smile, to win you with

are all the mornings still to live

in Morning Morgantown

Joni Mitchell

4. Last but certainly not least (for now) Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire says…

“I don’t want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic. I try to give that to people. I do misrepresent things. I don’t tell truths. I tell what ought to be truth.”

Need I say more?

Yours,

R
